What to expect:
If you’ve never been to a chiropractor before, you may already have a lot of questions and lot of ideas about what a chiropractor does. So let’s talk about what will happen on your initial visit to my office.
First, we ask you to fill out a brief health history form telling us about your past and current problems.
Second, we’re going to sit down and you will have a chance to tell me all about your health problem. I want to know how it started, what it feels like, what you’ve done about it so far, and what may have worked before…even if it was just temporarily.
Third, if after hearing about your problem it seems that your condition may be helped by chiropractic, I will perform an examination. The examination is generally pain free and informative for the patient.
There have been times where it has been very clear to me following the consultation or examination that my office is simply not the best place for the patient. If I don’t believe I can help you I will refer you to someone who can. I have many contacts in traditional and alternative health care that may be able to help you.
Will I Need X-rays?
X-rays are recommended less than 20% of the time in this office. The need for x-rays will be determined on a case-by-case basis and the reason for the tests will be explained to you before they are recommended. If they are recommended they will be reviewed by a board certified medical radiologist. X-rays have not been shown to add in the effectiveness of Chiropractic treatment. Diagnostic imaging can be imperative if a fracture is suspected. More extensive imaging is required if the patient has a history or symptoms of a more sinister pathology, such as cancer. My background as an Chiropractor, X-ray and C.T. tech. give me the necessary training to make the referral when indicated.
Will I Receive Treatment on My First Visit?
Yes. I usually treat on the first visit after a brief explanation of what is causing your symptoms. If you have never received chiropractic care I generally start with very gentle care. Chiropractic can be a very physical treatment, like exercise, if you do too much too fast you can get sore and feel worse. I offer treatment options that do not involve twisting, torquing or popping your neck or back if that is your preference. All of your treatment options will be explained and suggestions to speed your recovery will be made. If you have any questions about your treatment, heat/ice, exercise, massage, referral or modifying your daily routine they will be answered before you leave.
Island Chiropractic offers our patient form(s) online so they can be completed it in the convenience of your own home or office.
